Education FoundationIt's a fact that we never stop learning, not even when we've left school behind us hidden in the mists of antiquity. So what better place to start your child's learning than at Banyule Primary? Banyule Primary School is a relatively small school, with up to 240 students enrolled from Prep to Grade 6. This ensures a truly unique learning environment that not only ensures great relationship building and personal interaction between students and teachers, but also allows our teachers to cater for individual student needs and talents. CurriculumBanyule Primary School provides a comprehensive curriculum. The Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) is used as the basis for curriculum planning and implementation, from Prep through to Grade 6 (and beyond). For a look at some of the needs that VELS addresses, feel free to browse the VELS page at left, or for more information, go to the Victorian Government's VELS website for a more detailed discussion of each part of the learning program. This curriculum encourages children to not only learn the basic skills (remember Reading, 'Riting, and 'Rithmetic?) needed to function in our society, but it also builds and encourages problem solving, teamwork, and communication skills. And the beauty of VELS is that it provides a flexible framework to build on the basics. Because of our school size, we are uniquely able to not only build on those basic skills, but also to identify and nurture a child's individual special skills as well. Students who are identified as achieving outside the expected VELS levels are provided with an Individual Learning Plan (ILP). This includes both high achieving students and those who need extra support for their learning. Plans are supported by both the home and the school with agreed goals and strategies. Support programs such as Reading Recovery, Literacy Intervention and Enrichment programs may also provide extra assistance to these students. Flexible groupings for spelling and maths allows children to move between grades so they are working at the appropriate level. Extra-Curricular and Extension programs include:
For specific details of how the curriculum is implemented, please look at our "Our Classes" page, where we have broken down each grade's curriculum and provided examples of how we adapt the curriculum to your child's requirements.
