Chinese (Mandarin)

At Banyule Primary School, all students from Foundation to Year 6 participate in our Chinese (Mandarin) language program. The program is designed to build practical communication skills while developing students’ understanding of intercultural perspectives.

Learning is embedded in meaningful, real-life contexts, with Chinese language and culture explored through a variety of engaging themes. Students develop their ability to communicate in everyday situations- such as greetings, introducing themselves, asking and answering simple questions, and describing familiar topics whilst gaining insight into cultural practices, traditions, and ways of thinking.

A key focus of the program is the development of reading and writing skills in Mandarin. Students are introduced to Chinese characters (Hanzi) and learn how to recognise, read, and write them, progressing from simple pictorial characters in the early years to more complex structures as they move through the school. They also explore the use of Pinyin to support pronunciation and understanding.

The program includes vocabulary development, conversational language, and the exploration of significant cultural events and traditions. Students engage in celebrations such as Chinese New Year, where they learn about customs, symbols, food, and traditional stories, helping to deepen their cultural understanding.

Students actively use their language skills through songs, role play, games, and interactive activities. Digital technologies are also incorporated to support engagement, creativity, and independent learning. Through these rich learning experiences, we promote respect for diversity and encourage students to be open to different perspectives and global connections.
